Costello gradually switched over to the east shore. As the head of the Island was approached Gilmore rowed in close, taking advantage of the little shelter it afforded from the strong wind blowing upstream. Rooney continued his course in midway. At this point Costello was leading by a good two lengths, with Gilmore and Rooney rowing abreast of one another. The whole three spurted at once. Costello and Gilmore attained virtually speed crossing the finish line with nearly the same distance separating their shells.
