Founded in 1858, it is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the\u00a0United States.[1]<\/sup>\u00a0The member clubs are all located on the\u00a0Schuylkill River<\/a>\u00a0where it flows through\u00a0Fairmount Park<\/a>\u00a0in Philadelphia, with most of the clubs being located on the historic\u00a0Boathouse Row<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By charter, the Schuylkill Navy\u2019s object is “to secure united action among the several Clubs and to promote amateurism on the Schuylkill River.”[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

At its founding there were nine clubs with approximately 300 members, all located along a stretch of the Schuylkill River which runs through Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Clubs represented at the founding included America, Camilla, Chebucto, Falcon, Independent, Keystone, Neptune, Pennsylvania, and University Barge Club. Current member clubs include\u00a0Fairmount Rowing Association<\/a>,\u00a0Crescent Boat Club<\/a>,\u00a0Bachelors Barge Club<\/a>,\u00a0University Barge Club<\/a>,\u00a0Malta Boat Club<\/a>,\u00a0Vesper Boat Club<\/a>,College Boat Club<\/a>,\u00a0Penn Athletic Club Rowing Association<\/a>\u00a0(Penn AC),\u00a0Philadelphia Girls’ Rowing Club<\/a>\u00a0(PGRC),\u00a0Gillin Boat Club<\/a>\u00a0and St. Joseph’s University and St. Joseph’s Prep. At least 23 other clubs have belonged to the Navy at various times.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Many of the clubs in the Navy have a rich history, and have produced a large number of Olympic and World class competitors.
