W. E. Garrett GilmoreGeorge W. AllisonThomas J. Rooney
Won 1.302nd 1.313rd

Gilmore was responsible for the thrill of the afternoon when he caught up and passed Allison in the last ten yards, winning by a scant four feet. Rooney crossed the line a length and a half behind Allison. The latter, let it be said, rowed an extremely fine pace, taking the lead at the start and holding it clear past the lower end of the Island, when Gilmore’s unexpected spurt decided the struggle.

Won 9.542nd 9.573rd4th5th

Hapgood, after trailing Agnew for nearly the whole length of the course, flashed to the front a winner, when his opponent caught a crab at the head of the Island and lost nearly three lengths. Even then the difference at the finish was only one length. Borie was a good four boat lengths behind Hapgood while McNicholas and Engle were each six lengths back of the next shell, respectively.

Most interest centered in this race in which three of the oarsmen who challenged for the Gold Cup entered.
Costello retained his title, taking the flag at the finish with one and one-half length of open water showing between his boat and that of Gilmore.
Costello assumed the lead just after the half-mile post had been passed, wrestling it from Rooney, who had almost immediately forged ahead of Gilmore, the latter having gained a slight advantage at the start. Costello gradually switched over to the east shore. As the head of the Island was approached Gilmore rowed in close, taking advantage of the little shelter it afforded from the strong wind blowing upstream. Rooney continued his course in midway. At this point Costello was leading by a good two lengths, with Gilmore and Rooney rowing abreast of one another. The whole three spurted at once. Costello and Gilmore attained virtually speed crossing the finish line with nearly the same distance separating their shells. Rooney, however, could not stand the pace and dropped back of Gilmore to pass the Judges’ stand a poor third.

This race failed to come up to expectations. Vesper won by only a slight margin, one length, but did so with such ease as to fill the spectators with wonderment. Vesper practically toyed with Undine all the way down the course, spurting just enough to win as the finish line drew near.

Bachelors came through with a surprise by showing two lengths more speed than Undine could answer. Vesper, which has held a monopoly on the honors in this event for nearly ten years, finished third.
The Bachelor crew was composed of nearly all the Episcopal Academy blade wielders, who broke the one mile schoolboy record in the American Henley Regatta.
