Vesper got the jump on the other crews and in a few strokes was leading Malta by half a length. At the quarter-mile post Vesper was leading with Pennsylvania Barge displacing Malta for second. At the Trolley Bridge Vesper had half a length lead on Pennsylvania Barge which was only a few feet in front of Malta. Nearing the finish, Vesper spurted and increased its lead for a while, but Pennsylvania Barge hung on gamely and by increasing the stroke commenced to crawl up on Vesper. As the flag fell the prow of the Pennsylvania Barge shell was even with the No. 6 man in the Vesper boat. Malta finished in the rear.
